Still no end in sight to KimK confusion

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 7, 2015:
The KimK issue that created a buzz on social media, particularly Instagram last week, has seemingly not died down.
Instagram user Vii Narza, whose usage of the short form KimK to denote Kim Kardashian resulted in a local celebrity misunderstanding her, said it was the celebrity who should apologise to her and not the other way around.
The confusion began last week when Vii Narza commented on an Instagram posting of actress Fazura.
In the picture showing Fazura standing next to another person, Vii Narza wrote, “Mcm KimK yg dpn tu.” (The one in front looks like KimK).
To that, Fazura who thought KimK was a short form of a popular Malay curse word, commented on Vii Narza’s posting, criticising her (Vii Narza) for cursing her friend.
It was later understood that KimK was, in fact, a reference to Hollywood celebrity Kim Kardashian.
This resulted in netizens criticising Fazura for what happened, demanding that the actress apologise to Vii Narza.
The Malay Mail Online, yesterday quoted Fazura as defending her move of chiding Vii Narza for the use of KimK.
Fazura said it was Vii Narza’s followers on social media who should apologise to her friend if Vii Narza’s intention was to make fun (by using the word KimK).Also speaking to The Malay Mail Online, Vii Narza said it was Fazura who should apologise for misinterpreting the short form KimK.
It was also reported last week that Fazura had lost some 200,000 Instagram followers following the confusion.
After netizens began criticising her last week, Fazura also posted a lengthy justification on her Instagram account clarifying that certain short forms or words used in social media, especially those that could be mistaken for curse words, could easily be misconstrued.
“Sebelum ini banyak kata-kata yg digunakan hanya menggunakan short-forms dan double-meaning. Perlukah guna perkataan, frasa atau slanga dengan double-meaning? Mengundang rasa kurang senang banyak pihak?” wrote Fazura.
(“Of late, a lot of people are using short forms and words with double meanings. Is it necessary to use such words, phrases or slang that contain double meanings? That will hurt other people?”)
Along with the post was a collage of pictures of Fazura and her friends.
