BATU PAHAT: The teenage driver of a Mercedes-Benz involved in a crash that killed four people on Jalan Renggam–Simpang Renggam, Kluang, has been remanded for two days by the magistrate's court here today.
The remand order against the 19-year-old Singapore university student was issued by magistrate Mustaqim Sukarno from today until tomorrow.
The application was made to facilitate investigations under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for dangerous and reckless driving, which carries a jail term of up to five years and a maximum fine of RM15,000 upon conviction.
The suspect is believed to have been driving dangerously, while his 22-year-old brother, who was behind the wheel of a BMW 530e, is also alleged to have been involved in a chain of events leading to the incident at 1.15pm yesterday.
The brothers are believed to have been racing prior to the crash.
Earlier, the suspect arrived at court at 10.20am before being taken to chambers for remand proceedings.
A brief commotion occurred when the suspect's lawyer attempted to block photographers from taking pictures as he was led from the police truck.
In the incident, four family members were killed — Semek Mat Soh, 73; her son Aiman Mohd Rashid, 36; his wife Nor Azlina Abd Latip, 33; and their daughter Nur Airish Syifa Sidek, 10.
All the victims were travelling from Melaka and returning home to Kota Tinggi.
Kluang police chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh has urged witnesses to contact the nearest police station or the Kluang district police headquarters at 07-7784222, 07-7766822 (hotline), 07-7784256 or 014-365682.
