https://newswav.com/article/opinion-is-malaysia-a-net-energy-importer-or-exporter-A2604_WnvG9l

OPINION | Is Malaysia a Net Energy Importer or Exporter ?

If Malaysia is a net energy exporter, shouldn’t we be told to celebrate the spike in oil prices, instead of brace for hard times?

Why?

This is the question on the minds of many Malaysians.

If Malaysia is a net energy exporter, then rising global oil prices should be a blessing. That is not an ideological claim — it is a basic economic expectation. When the value of what a country produces rises, national income rises. When national income rises, citizens should benefit.

Even Nomura, one of the world’s largest investment houses, confirms it: Malaysia is among the few countries expected to benefit from the oil price spike triggered by the Middle East conflict. Higher oil prices, they argue, strengthen external balances, keep growth resilient, and improve government revenue. In simple terms: when oil prices go up, Malaysia earns more.

So naturally, the next question follows — almost too obvious to ask: If the country earns more, shouldn’t the people feel it? Shouldn’t higher national profits translate into stable fuel prices, cushioned inflation, and a government confident enough to shield its citizens from global shocks?

Instead, Malaysians are told the exact opposite.

We are told to brace.

We are told subsidies may not hold.

We are told the government is operating in “crisis mode.”

Transport Minister Anthony Loke put it bluntly:

“The government is operating in crisis mode now. Even though we don’t feel it in our daily lives, the world is facing a global crisis. This is not something to be taken lightly or joked about; it is a very serious matter.”

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, meanwhile, cautioned:

“We have enough fuel reserves to keep the supply of RON95 petrol and maintain the price of RM1.99 per litre at least until May. But after May, if the war continues, we cannot guarantee that the supply will not be disrupted. This is something we all need to pay attention to.”

And here lies the paradox: even Petronas Dagangan Berhad, a government-linked corporation whose revenues should logically rise in tandem with global oil prices, is framing the surge as a looming crisis. Its public statements makes it sound as if Malaysia is an energy importer rather than exporter, while emphasizing supply constraints, rising operational costs, and global market volatility — to effectively make it sound as if Malaysia cannot benefit from the spike at all.

So we are left with a glaring contradiction:

• Nomura says Malaysia profits.
• Petronas Dagangan says rising oil prices threaten stability.
• The Transport Minister calls it a crisis.
• The Prime Minister says subsidies may not last.
• And the people? They are expected to pay more, feel less, and accept it as unavoidable.

How does that make sense?

If rising oil prices increase national income, then there are only a few plausible explanations for why ordinary Malaysians are not feeling relief.

The first is leakage — somewhere between national revenue and public benefit, the gains are dissipating through inefficiency, mismanagement, or outright waste.

The second is concentration — the profits exist, but are captured by a narrow segment of corporations, intermediaries, or politically connected actors, rather than being redistributed to the broader public.

The third is structural — Malaysia’s energy reality is more complicated than the “net exporter” label suggests. Domestic consumption, declining crude production, and refining dependencies mean that even if the country sells oil at higher global prices, the government may not be able to immediately translate those profits into lower consumer costs.

Even this explanation, however, raises questions. If structural limitations are the reason, why have the government and Petronas Dagangan not provided clear data to back it up? Why are Malaysians left to infer a crisis that, according to independent analysts, should not exist?

The absence of clarity amplifies the contradiction. When a government-linked corporation and the state itself hint at crisis while external analysts confirm profit, public trust erodes. It starts to look less like a technical challenge and more like a political choice: profits exist, but ordinary citizens are not beneficiaries.

And here, a new dimension emerges: is the government attempting to stifle the very questions citizens are asking?

Prime Minister Anwar has urged the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to crack down on so-called “fake news” regarding fuel and electricity prices. In a video message, he said:

“We are operating under extraordinary circumstances with mounting challenges, yet this does not stop those who continue to lie, spread hatred, sabotage, and betray. Firm action must be taken, as the dissemination of false information is an irresponsible act that impacts the public. These acts are carried out solely to secure narrow political gains, with no regard for their impact on the people.”

On one hand, misinformation must be addressed. But on the other, the government’s move raises an uncomfortable question: are Malaysians being warned not to ask why they must endure hardship in a time when the nation is allegedly profiting? Is the crackdown on “fake news” inadvertently—or intentionally—attempting to suppress legitimate debate about why rising profits are not translating into public benefit?

This is not just about economics. It is deeply political.

A population will tolerate hardship if it believes the burden is shared, necessary, and fairly managed. But when hardship appears disconnected from national reality — when a “profiting” country produces a “suffering” people — that tolerance erodes.

And that erosion is already visible. Discussions on social media, in communities, and in business circles increasingly question not just fuel prices but the very management of state revenue. Citizens are asking uncomfortable questions:

• Where is the money going?
• Who benefits from rising oil prices?
• Is the system designed to serve the many or merely protect the few?

By acknowledging the severity of the crisis while simultaneously allowing a government-linked company to frame it in alarming terms, the state risks deepening public cynicism. Citizens are asked to trust assurances that are contradicted by entities responsible for managing national resources.

Ultimately, the issue boils down to credibility. Hardship alone may not trigger unrest, but hardship that defies logic, wealth that bypasses the public, and profits concentrated in the hands of a few is combustible.

Because in the end, people do not revolt against suffering alone. They revolt against suffering that makes no sense.

And right now, Malaysia is being asked to endure precisely that — at a time when global circumstances should be a blessing, not a burden.

Paper Brent is at $109. Physical Brent is at $141

Physical is the price if you need oil now. Paper is theprice if delivery can wait until June

However you look at the Middle East, this will not befixed in a few weeks.

Batik Air Malaysia kurangkan penerbangan, tawar cuti tanpa gaji susulan kenaikan kos bahan api
