PETALING JAYA: Lim Kean Chye, the founding member of a political party that fought for Malaya and Singapore’s independence from the British, died on Wednesday.
He was 103, Malay Mail Online reported.
His daughter, Miao Yiong, said Lim died at his home late Wednesday night.
“There will be no funeral, wake or any ceremony because my father did not like to make a fuss, so it will be a private cremation with close family members (attending),” she was quoted as saying.
Miao Yiong said her father is believed to have died from old age.
She also revealed that her father, a founding member of the Malayan Democratic Union, had a pacemaker installed a decade ago and had been frail in recent days.
Lim comes from a family of prominent lawyers. His father, Lim Cheng Ean is a Cambridge-trained lawyer and a legislative councillor in the 1930s.
His brother, Kean Siew, was a prominent lawyer and politician, while his sister, Lim Phaik Gan, better known as PG Lim, was the first Malaysian woman to study in Cambridge, the New Straits Times reported.
When Lim – a Cambridge-educated lawyer himself – was in Ipoh and started practising law, he became close to former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, who was then a deputy public prosecutor.
Lim is survived by his wife, daughters Miao Ling and Miao Yiong, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. |
