KK City Hall to probe viral posts of tourists letting kids to pee, defecate at malls

KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu City Hall will investigate incidents of tourists letting their children pee and defecate at public spaces inside and outside malls, following Facebook posts shared by social media users.

On Sunday (July 7), two different postings were circulated on social media which went viral over the incidents, where the culprits were believed to be tourists as they did not adhere to the norm of going into a public toilet.

The first was a lady holding a child to pee over a dustbin located next to an escalator, believed to be inside Imago mall.

The Facebook user, who uploaded the picture, warned the public when touching the top of dustbins after witnessing the misconduct.

Need no further details from me, picture speaks a thousand words, said Bonnie Wong, who was so stunned that she did not think about confronting them.

She added that she did not see any security guard present at the time to raise the issue.

The second post was in the form of a three-second video was shared by Facebook user "Sabah Kota Kinabalu", where a man and a woman were seen assisting a child to defecate near a motorcycle parking area, suspected to be just outside the Centre Point shopping mall building.

Kota Kinabalu City Hall mayor Datuk Nordin Siman, when contacted, said they have not received any reports yet on the matter, but will follow up with investigations.

We will check the close-circuit television (CCTV) recordings from Imago and Centre Point malls, he said in a text reply on Monday (July 8).

Grab invests in startups in farming to shared kitchens to grow its super-app

Want to know what new businesses Grab is thinking of going into next? Look at what startups they are investing in or helping to build.
When Anthony Tan, co-founder and chief executive of the Singapore-based firm stood onstage a year ago at a conference in Singapore to announce the creation of a venture capital arm, he called it a pay it forward moment.

The idea was to use the platform as a launch pad for startups in the region and to mentor and share the huge mistakes that we have made so that you dont have to, he said.
One year hence, Grab Ventures has invested in startups like Helpling, an online home-services platform, an online-ticketing service in Indonesia called BookMyShow, and Sejasa, a home improvement and maintenance services marketplace.

Whereas the first batch focused on consumer-facing businesses, the current crop of startups in the programme are focused on farmers and small businesses.
You cant do everything in-house, said Yeo over a morning coffee at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, where he was attending the Rise tech conference. We focus on our core businesses, the rest we partner.
By nurturing an ecosystem of startups, Grab aims to eventually create 100 million micro entrepreneurs in the South-East Asia region, or gig-economy workers that have been able to benefit from working on a Grab service.
Building a well-rounded ecosystem of services allows companies like Grab to obtain troves of valuable user data that can be used for targeted advertising or understanding users needs, to offer better services. Offering a variety of services that are part of everyday life also makes the platform more sticky, ensuring that users remain active while also serving as a higher barrier of entry for potential competitors.
That is also the way Chinas most famous Internet giants, Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent, have been operating. Between them, the BAT companies have invested in hundreds of firms every year as they acquire talent, expertises and businesses to plug into their respective ecosystems. Alibaba is the owner of the South China Morning Post.
Citing the example of CloudKitchen, a concept for delivery-only restaurants, Yeo said that Grab was able to provide orders for the eateries through its app, and as the landlord, can reduce the cost for operators because its main aim is not to extract the highest rent but to enrich the offerings for its delivery service. IPOH: Datuk Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim has been appointed the 11th mayor of Ipoh effective July 1.
The former Selangor state Economic Planning Unit director takes over the position from Datuk Zamri Man, who retired on medical grounds.
Ahmad Suaidi received his letter of appointment from Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu at a ceremony at the Menteri Besars office in Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan, here, today.
The 49-year-old, who hails from Perak, holds a masters degree in Biotechnology from Universiti Putra Malaysia and a bachelors degree in Global Information and Telecommunications Studies from Waseda University in Japan.
Speaking to the press later, Ahmad Suaidi said he would continue with the councils development agenda to ensure Ipoh is known as a 'Clean, Green and Progressive' city.
I will hold a meeting with my officers to come up with a long-term plan around this agenda. I will also iron out several issues to improve the township management system towards a smart city status, he added.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Faizal said he wanted Ipoh to become the cleanest city in the country again.
The last time we received the cleanest city award was in 2016. I believe with this new leadership, we could win again, he added.
Ipoh City Council (MBI) was announced the best local government for 2016, based on a star-rating system by the then Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry, which was aimed at motivating municipal councils to improve their services.
MBI received a five-star rating with a score of 97.45 based on a rigid screening process with 354 criteria, beating 148 other municipal councils in Malaysia.
Among the criteria in the checklist are cleanliness, infrastructure, public amenities, media relations and programmes held for the community.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Pakatan Harapan government has withdrawn the Bill to lower the age of voting to 18, as well as the National Security Council (Amendment) Bill 2019.

The Constitution (Amendment) 2019 Bill to amend Article 119 constitution to lower voting age was withdrawn by Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman under Standing Order 62 to allow for it to be tweaked.

The Bill was tabled by Syed Saddiq last Thursday (July 4) and was supposed to have been debated for the second reading on July 16.

The Bill, which requires a two-thirds majority vote of the 222 seat in Dewan Rakyat to amend the constitution, will be tweaked to accommodate lawmakers' demands.

The Opposition also wants the eligibility age of election candidates to be lowered to 18, while also calling on the Election Commission to register the estimated four million unregistered voters.

Also withdrawn was the Bill to amend the National Security Council Act, which was tabled in April 9. The Bill was withdrawn by Deputy Minister in the Prime Ministers Department Hanipa Maidin.

The amendments, among other things, would see the power to declare security zones be transferred from the Prime Minister to the Agong on the advice of the NSC.

It was learned that the Bill was withdrawn to allow the courts to decide on an ongoing suit filed Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to challenge the law passed in 2015.

In 2004, 20-year-old Ashley Howley disappeared from the town of Columbus, Ohio, USA. While the case went cold, Ashley, or rather, her spirit, was diligently trying to communicate with Kristy Robinett, a spiritual medium who spoke extensively with Readers Digest about helping law enforcement solve crimes like this one. Ashleys spirit, which according to Robinett, needed time to figure out how to get her message across, eventually told Robinett shed been murdered by her boyfriend and where her body could be found. In 2008, her body was found in the very spot she said it would be marked by a stick and her boyfriend was brought to justice.
Howleys case was solved, but to this day, these remain the 19 strangest unsolved mysteries of all time.

Comprehensive treatment services available for M'sian haj pilgrims in Madinah

MADINAH (Bernama): Malaysian haj pilgrims do not have to worry about health facilities because the Tabung Haji Board (TH) and the Saudi Arabian government have provided complete health treatment services.

Tabung Haji Board (TH) Madinah Operations (Medical) director Dr Hairul Izwan Abdul Rahman said the main treatment centre in the Madinah TH headquarters in Dar Al-Jiffry here is supported by one clinic each in the three zones where Malaysian pilgrim accommodations are.

He said in addition, the Saudi Arabian government is providing free health services to all haj pilgrims for any ailment, including those which require surgery and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.

"The treatment centre in Dar Al-Jiffry has 37 beds for patients, including the observation room, and red and yellow zone emergency treatment rooms. Our three clinics are at the Al-Haram Hotel, Movenpick Hotel and Rawda Al-Aqiq.

"We have obtained permission from the Saudi Arabian Health Ministry for us to begin operations and we have brought from Malaysia experts and staff in various fields of medicine, he told Bernama on Monday (July 15).

As many as 30,200 Malaysians are scheduled to perform their pilgrimages this year, aided by 640 TH staff.

Dr Hairul Izwan, a public health specialist, said the TH team included medical specialists, an anaesthesiologist, pharmacist, dietician, physiotherapist, medical officers, nurses, X-ray technicians and medical laboratory technicians.

"We have complete medical facilities here, but if the patient needs more serious treatment, we will send him to a Saudi Arabian hospital and we will be with the pilgrim to assist him, he said.

He said so far, the team has not seen many cases among Malaysian pilgrims, only those with minor health issues such as fever, cough, flu, dry skin and knee problems. - Bernama

Commentary: Long hours at the office could be killing you
Workaholism can turn into a potentially fatal disorder, says University of Warwick's Shainaz Firfiray.

By Shainaz Firfiray

15 Jul 2019 02:46PM (Updated: 15 Jul 2019 02:50PM)

COVENTRY: UK employees have the longest working week compared to other workers in the European Union. But, despite the long hours, recent studies have shown this does not make the UK a more productive nation.
An analysis by the UK Trade Union Congress on working hours and productivity found that, while UK full-time staff worked almost two hours more than the EU average, they were not as productive as staff in Denmark who worked fewer hours in the average week.

Such findings have triggered an interest in the relationship between the number of hours worked and productivity C and the results of several studies have suggested the concept of an optimal working time.
This refers to an optimal number of hours spent at work after which productivity begins to decline and acute or chronic health problems begin to arise. Some experts suggest it should be no more than 35 hours a week.
So, while the prevalence of flexible working and the use of technologies to facilitate it have brought many benefits to organisations, such changes have also helped to create a 24/7 work culture C and with it that feeling of always being on and available to take work calls or emails.

And, as research shows, employees working in such environments may actually show lower levels of engagement C which over time could reduce their productivity.

IT IMPACTS YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
Several studies have shown that some aspects of work are important predictors of health, happiness, motivation and life satisfaction.
For a start, the number of hours people work has a major impact on their physical and psychological health. Evidence also suggests that long working hours are associated with hypertension, heart disease and the risk of injuries and accidents.

Burnout is usually seen as a consequence of a chronic stressful work environment.

Other studies have shown associations between hours of work and stress, anxiety and depression. The propensity to work long hours also has an adverse effect on family and social relationships and can increase family conflict.
But research studying the impact of working hours on health has also recognised how peoples perceptions regarding long working hours and time demands can affect this negative association.

Two lodge report over allegedly non-existent degree programme

IPOH: Two people have lodged police reports claiming that a tuition centre in Kuala Lumpur has been deceiving people into signing up for a degree course supposedly offered in collaboration with a university in Spain which does not exist.
The centre C which has headquarters in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru C has over 200 centres under its franchise nationwide.

Pang Chee Wai, 25, the owner of one of the centres in Taiping, and Ooi Jia Kee, 21, a tutor at his centre, said they realised the degree course was likely fake.
They said the main centre kept changing the universities it supposedly collaborated with over the last three years.

Pang said that he took up the part-time course at the centres headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, and added that when he received his degree scroll, the name of the university printed on the scroll was different from what was expected.
I received my scroll in 2016 during a convocation ceremony held by the centre in a hall, with some people handing out the degrees," said Pang
He added that the people handing out the degrees had proclaimed themselves to be professors.
Pang said that in March, Ooi started investigating because she was not satisfied when she was told that the centre was now collaborating with a different university for her course.
Speaking at a press conference organised by Perak MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau chief Low Guo Nan, Pang said that both he and Ooi were suspicious about the programme.
We had no idea who the lecturers were, and there was not much information available on the Spanish university over the Internet, he said.
Pang and Ooi lodged police reports about the matter at the Simpang police station in Taiping.
He said that he spent about RM50,000 on his 'degree course' over a span of four years, while Ooi, who is currently in her third year, had forked out almost RM20,000.
Ooi said a group of people from the headquarters had been offering the four-year part-time degree courses to the tutors, with their monthly fees deducted from their salaries once they signed up.
Every month, RM412 is deducted from my salary for the course. I received my 'diploma' in 2017, and I have another year to go before I obtain my 'degree'," said Ooi.
But with the diploma being fake, I will not be able to transfer credits even if I enrolled in a proper university. I feel so cheated as I wasted three years studying for a course offered by a university that does not exist, she added.
Ooi said she had questioned the management in Kuala Lumpur, but the director avoided her questions and told her she was not in charge.
She said that the person she spoke to kept beating around the bush.
If I am not mistaken between 200 and 300 students have registered for this course. I hope they will be brave enough to come forward to lodge police reports, said Ooi.
Low urged the police to take the reports seriously and added that the Education Ministry should also look into the matter.
Seeing the universitys website and its Facebook account, (I think) they look so unprofessional. There is not much information available as well, he said.

Make sure taps are running by 9pm on July 26, SPAN warns Air Selangor

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has issued a warning to Air Selangor to ensure that the water supply is restored by 9pm next Friday (July 26).
SPAN chairman Charles Santiago said that while the Commission understood the reason for the water disruption in some parts of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, they were also troubled by it.

If the water supply doesnt come back on by 9pm, Friday (July 26), then SPAN will request that the Selangor Mentri Besar make changes in Air Selangor's senior management.
This is a warning because we recognise that there are one too many water cuts happening, Santiago told a press conference at the Parliament lobby on Wednesday (July 17).

The improvement works will take place from 9am to 9pm on July 23 to improve the water supply system to some three million consumers in 758 areas in seven districts in Klang, Petaling, Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Langat, Hulu Selangor and Kuala Selangor.
Santiago acknowledged that the work needed to be done as parts and equipment needed to be replaced.
It is like a car. After a few years, it needs servicing. Similarly, this equipment has been running 24-7 for the last seven to eight years.
So it's not like Air Selangor is irresponsible about the servicing.
There is no choice (for the scheduled water disruption), but we can understand the anger from the people because it's three to four days of no water, he added.
Santiago said as the regulator, SPAN would be monitoring the activities of Air Selangor to ensure it complied with the water disruption period proposed.
Asked if the deadline given to Air Selangor was still applicable if there were unexpected disruptions during the improvement works, Santiago said he did not want to speculate.
Our point basically is the guarantee given by Air Selangor that by 9pm on July 26, all the areas affected would have their water supply back to normal, he said.

Walaupun terpaksa bangun awal, ia memang berbaloi, kata Muhammad Amshyar.

Gerhana bulan sebenarnya berlaku apabila bulan memasuki kawasan bayang-bayang bumi.

A squeaky clean: friendly robots spruce up Singapore

Hundreds of "friendly" robots that speak multiple languages and sing are being rolled out across hi-tech Singapore, to help clean the city-state's hotels, shopping malls and government buildings.
Four of the robots, which have oval-shaped heads with lights for eyes, have already got down to work and it is hoped that 300 will be put into service by March next year.

They scrub, mop, vacuum and sweep autonomously, and can entertain by rapping in English.
The robots speak all four of multi-ethnic Singapore's official languages C English, Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil C plus Japanese and "Singlish", a local patois that mixes English with words from the myriad local tongues.

The devices, which come in 13 different models and are produced by local company LionsBot, also tell jokes or ask humans to move aside if they are in the way.
Humans can get a response from the robots by pressing a button called the "heart", or use an app to ask them how they are feeling or what their hobbies are.
"Everybody knows a cleaner that's always friendly and would remember your name and say hi, so we hope to recreate that," LionsBot CEO Dylan Ng shared.
The robots can be rented from SG$1,350 (RM4,085) a month.
LionsBot has signed agreements with six cleaning partners to deploy the robots gradually over the coming months as they are produced.
Those already in use are in Changi Airport's new shopping and entertainment complex, an art gallery, a resort and an office building. The robots also have a serious purpose: to help plug a labour shortage in the rapidly ageing country of 5.6 million people.
Ng stressed the robots were not intended to replace human cleaners, but to act as their assistants. C AFP

Road users puzzled drains on Jalan 16/1 stuffed with dried leaves

THE drains along Jalan 16/1 in Petaling Jaya are filled with dried leaves, and motorists are wondering if an elements of mischief is behind this state of affairs.
K.Selena, who uses this road in the mornings, said it was rare for workers who sweep the road to stuff leaves into the drain.

The rainy season has started, and if the drains are clogged with leaves it may lead to flash floods.
I have never seen dried leaves along this stretch of road ever stuffed into the drains like this. I wonder if it was some act of sabotage or mischief, she said.

Another motorist C.L. Lee also noticed the dried leaves and twigs stuffed into the drains as he was driving along the road at 2pm.
The road looked like it was swept but all the drains from the intersection from Jalan 16/1 and Jalan 16/9 was filled with dried leaves. This spot floods sometimes, so I hope the drains are kept clear, said Lee.
The Petaling Jaya City Council has been notified over the situation by StarMetro.
