'The hero in my heart': wife mourns dead Thai Navy Seal
The family of a former Thai Navy Seal who died while helping to rescue 12 soccer teammates and their coach from Tham Luang cave says he told them to "cherish every day" before he lost his life.
Petty Officer First Class Saman Gunan died on Friday in the cold waters deep inside the cave complex in north-western Thailand after running out of oxygen. He had been part of the dive team setting up air tanks along the rescue route.
A dive buddy tried to administer first aid in the water and then got Saman through to chamber three, where further attempts were made to revive him, but it was too late.
His widow, Waleeporn Gunan, told the BBC she was proud of her "hero" husband."If you ask me if I'm sad, it's like I've died but I'm still alive," she said.
Waleeporn said Saman loved helping others, doing charity work and "getting things done".
"He's been praised as a hero because of who he was," she said.
"You are the hero in my heart," she said of her late husband.
When news of his death broke, the Thai king said Saman would have a funeral with full honours. The BBC reported the funeral was held at a temple in the north-east province of Roi Et.
Saman's father, Wichai Gunan, said he was proud of his "beloved" son, but very sad too.
"Daddy loves you," he said.
Waleeporn said pride in her husband's actions was helping her with her grief.
"Saman once said we never knew when we would die, we can't control that, so we need to cherish every day."

Hero Aussie doctor Richard Harris in tragic family loss
Tragedy has struck the Australian doctor at the heart of the rescue of the young Thai soccer team with the death of his father, soon after the remaining boys and their coach escaped their cave prison.
Adelaide anaesthetist and underwater cave explorer Richard "Harry" Harris risked his own life to make the treacherous journey to the underground chamber where the group was trapped for two weeks.
But as the successful rescue was completed on Tuesday, Harris' father passed away, his boss and MedSTAR clinical director Andrew Pearce said.
Australian doctor Richard Harris, who was specially requested by the diving team involved in the Thai cave rescue
"It is with great sadness that I confirm that Harry's dad passed away last night a short time after the successful rescue operation in Thailand," he said in a statement.
"He will be coming home soon and taking some well-earned time off to be with his family. He has asked that the family's privacy is respected at this time."
Pearce said the whole team at South Australia Ambulance Service was "incredibly proud" of the work Harris has done.
"We are delighted that Harry and the boys are safe and that he was able to play such a remarkable role in the Australian response," he said.
Harris was hailed a hero, having made the dangerous, four kilometre journey in and out of Tham Luang cave every day to check on the health of the trapped boys.
David Strike, a dive event organiser who has known Harris for more than a decade, said Harris and the other members of the international team who helped rescue the boys were all heroes.
"Richard is just one member of a team of uniquely qualified and extraordinary people prepared to sacrifice their own comfort, safety and wellbeing for the benefit of others," he said.
"It's an over-used term, but all of those involved are true heroes."
Harris, an anaesthetist and expert cave rescue diver from South Australia, had played an "integral part" in the rescue operation in north-western Thailand, Australia's Foreign Minister
Julie Bishop said earlier on Wednesday.
He has attracted international attention for his expert help, assessing the health of the boys and their coach to clear the way for their rescue.
Bishop said Dr Harris is internationally renowned for his cave rescue expertise, and heads up a cave rescue operation.
She said the South Australian anaesthetist is well known to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for his help on their medical assistance teams during natural disasters in the Pacific region and his time working at the Port Villa hospital in Vanuatu with the Australian Aid program.
Talking to the Australian TV show Sunrise on Wednesday morning Bishop said the Australian government was "just delighted" with the work of Harris and his dive partner Craig Challen, who is a vet from Perth.
"Between them, and the rest of the Australian team, I believe we were an integral part to the overall rescue," she said.

Thai cave: Coach, three boys 'stateless'
Three of the boys, as well as their coach, who were trapped in a Thai cave, are refugees, according to reports.
Adul Sam-on, 14, coach Ekapol "Ake" Chantawong, and two others were stateless ethnic minorities, reported the New York Times.
Born in Myanmar, Adul and his parents crossed over into Thailand with him eight years ago, the paper reported.

Ekapol was an orphan who lost his parents at age 10, friends said.
He then trained to be a monk but left the monastery to care for his ailing grandmother in Mae Sai in northern Thailand.
There, he split his time between a working as a temple hand at a monastery and training the then newly-established Moo Pa - Wild Boars - team.
He found kindred spirits in the boys, many of whom had grown up poor or were stateless ethnic minorities, common in this border area between Myanmar and Thailand.
Up to 400,000 people were stateless in Thailand, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
