Nurul Izzah divorce case awaits appointment of members for reconciliation committee

KUALA LUMPUR: Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar and husband Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar Raja Salim have been ordered by the lower Syariah Court here to appoint members for a reconciliation committee over their divorce case.

The plaintiff's (Nurul Izzah) representatives for committee members were present but the defendant's (Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar) committee members were absent from court on Tuesday.

Lower Syariah Court judge Ab Malek Awang, who is presiding over the case, set April 17 for both sides to present their reconciliation committee members and June 12 as the date for presentation of the report on the committee's decision.

Nurul Izzah arrived at the Jalan Duta Syariah Court before 9am accompanied by two others while her husband arrived in court about an hour later with his lawyers.

The case, held behind closed doors, was mentioned for the first time before the same judge on Jan 21.

Counsel Normawaddah Ramli acted for Nurul Izzah and counsel Zulkifli Che Yong on behalf of Raja Ahmad Shahrir Islandar, replacing Muhamad Nakhaie Ishak on March 11.

A reconciliation committee, chaired by a religious officer and with representatives appointed from both sides, was a requisite by the court to assist both parties in coming to an amicable decision.

“The committee is a requirement for (this) divorce. Once a divorce is filed and receives the consent of the court, and if one party disagrees to the divorce, then a reconciliation committee is formed,” said Zulkifli.

The 34-year-old PKR vice-president filed a divorce petition against her husband, 35-year-old Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar at the lower Syariah Court in late December last year under Section 47 Islamic Family Law (Federal Territories) Act 1984.

Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar was understood to have received the fasakh (annulment of marriage) petition on Jan 16 this year.

The couple, married on May 9, 2003, have a seven-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy.
