FAM: Malaysia-N.Korea match in Pyongyang to proceed as planned unless team safety an issue









PETALING JAYA: The Football Association Of Malaysia (FAM) will only request to play their 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers against North Korea at a neutral venue if the national team's safety is threatened.

Malaysia, who are in Group B with North Korea, Hong Kong and Lebanon, will kick off their campaign against North Korea at the Kim Il-sung Stadium in Pyongyang on March 28.

FAM secretary-general Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin (pic) said that he had spoken to Asian Football Confederation (AFC) general secretary Datuk Windsor Paul over the matter.

"We will discuss the issue with the AFC and the embassy to see if there is a threat to the team's safety in Pyongyang. It is all OK at the moment, and we will inform the media of any new developments," said Hamidin at Wisma FAM on Monday.

"We have been liaising with Datuk Windsor over the last few weeks. The AFC will decide to either postpone the match or play it at a neutral venue if there's a concern over safety," he said after an FAM exco meeting.

Diplomatic ties between Malaysia and North Korea are strained over the assassination of Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of the regime's supreme leader Kim Jong-un, at KLIA 2 last Monday.

North Korea's ambassador to Malaysia, Kang Chol, has criticised Malaysia's handling of the matter.

Malaysia has also recalled its ambassador to North Korea.

Kang was summoned to Wisma Putra Monday, and later released a strongly-worded statement criticising the Malaysian police's investigation into the murder.
